At Planning Center, we build powerful web and mobile applications for churches. Each of our eight products has a dedicated team of designers and developers committed to refining and expanding that product in response to real customer needs. Our customers include not only 90 of the 100 largest churches in the country, but also tens of thousands of small community churches—we strive to make day-to-day operations easier for all of them.

We’re seeking a UX/UI designer with expertise in product design to support our team in improving Planning Center software. The ideal candidate will be well-versed in visual design, UX best practices, and able to communicate effectively about design process.

The job

The UX/UI Designer reports to the Director of Product Design and is part of a centralized UX Design team. In this role, you can expect to:

  • Take ownership of your projects and craft design strategy for our suite of products.
  • Participate in discovery with internal teams and with customers.
  • Collaborate across multiple teams and with your team of fellow designers. This includes working with Product Managers, Product Designers, Support, and Marketing.
  • Advocate for our customers by crafting user experiences that are simple and intuitive.
  • Contribute patterns and recommendations to our design system to promote consistency across products.

Skills + experience

The right candidate has:

  • An impressive portfolio of UX Case studies and visual UI design work.
  • Previous experience designing for a web-based product.
  • Strong sense of composition, UI design, and UX best practices.
  • Proficiency with design tools. We use Figma as our preferred UI/prototyping tool. Experience with comparable tools like Sketch, XD, InVision, etc. will also be considered.
  • Experience shepherding a project through the cycles of discovery, brainstorming, concepting, and iteration.
  • Clear verbal and written communication and the aptitude for writing design specifications.
  • At least a basic working knowledge of front-end development (e.g., HTML and CSS).

Designers at Planning Center are:

  • Invested We care about the products we create and the people we create them for, and we all contribute to the vision and direction of our products. Every one of our designers is critical to their team.
  • Curious We aren’t afraid to ask questions, experiment, and iterate. We also love playing with fun new technologies & processes, and we take time every few months to do just that.
  • Humble We are always looking for opportunities to grow and learn from one another.

We believe the strongest teams are made up of people with diverse backgrounds and experiences, and we are committed to cultivating that diversity here at Planning Center. We are ready for the ongoing work of building an inclusive, supportive place for you to do your best work.

Where we work

Planning Center is a company of 110 people—and growing! About 80 of us are spread across the US in home offices and co-working spaces. Although we have a beautiful office building in Carlsbad, California our work culture is optimized for our distributed teams. We rely heavily on tools like Slack and video conferencing throughout the day. A few times a year we gather in person for team retreats.

When and how we work

Planning Center is serious about work-life balance. We take meaningful steps to avoid burnout and it’s the main reason we have extremely low employee turnover across the company. We avoid shipping code on Fridays, we mute Slack notifications on the weekends, we don’t feel guilty about vacations or sabbaticals, and we trust people with their time.

What to expect if you apply

Here’s what the entire application process looks like:

  1. Submit your resume and portfolio by January 14. (Note that we’ll be out of the office from 12/27-12/31, and won’t be responding to inquiries until 1/3/2022)
  2. If your resume passes the initial screening we’ll set up a casual phone interview (10-15 minutes) to introduce ourselves, give you a few more details about the company/position, and see if there’s potential for a good fit.
  3. Assuming steps 1 and 2 went well, you’ll receive a design exercise with a specific problem to design for. This is an opportunity for you to show us how you approach a problem and arrive at a design solution.
  4. Typically at this stage, we would have you pack your bags and visit our home office in San Diego, but depending on COVID restrictions at the time of your interview, this may be a remote meeting. This will be a half-day of interviews where you’ll get to meet our leadership team and members of your potential new design team.
  5. It’s offer time! Throughout the previous steps, your expertise and experience have been assessed against our well defined designer levels and the salary amount of the offer will be decided solely based on that assessment. At Planning Center, every designer of the same skill level makes the same amount (plus a small bonus for seniority). We aim to pay at the 90th percentile for each level based on New York salary rates as researched by Payscale.
  6. Start Date: This is flexible depending on how long it takes to find the right candidate. We are hoping for the new hire to start mid February 2022.

Equipment

We’ll provide all the things you need to get your job done. That includes a laptop, monitor, standing desk, chair, and a budget to purchase other items you may need.
